Also officials gather to discuss the state of early childhood education policy and research. Two long-running educational programs have been cut from next year's budget in Jefferson City. KBIA's Elle Moxley reports on how some of the program's alumni are responding. Today we explore issues about diversity. Diversity plays an important role in school, especially in college as many students come from vastly different backgrounds. To make universities more accepting, almost all universities have a policy that keeps university employees from discriminating based on race, sex or creed. Now student groups at the University of Missouri are talking about adding gender identity to the UM system's own non-discrimination policy. And five internationally diverse panelists teamed up at MU recently to discuss the power of storytelling and the impact that narration has in the process of healing those traumatized by war and other disasters. Whether it be a new superintendent for Columbia Public Schools or tuition relief for students trying to finish college and begin a career, a fresh start can be a welcome change. Of course, no new beginning can start unless another beginning comes to an end which happened at the University of Missouri as UM system Executive Vice President Gordon Lamb announced his retirement. The Columbia Public School District is continuing its search for a new leader. Last week, the board narrowed the list of possible superintendent candidates to two finalists: Skip Deming and Chris Belcher. Belcher is a superintendent from Kearney, Missouri. Skip Deming is a retired superintendent who has previously worked at Columbia Schools but now lives in Arizona. We profile each candidate in this week’s Exam.

Specifically, Gary Forsee talks about his first year as the President of the University of Missouri system and what he thinks the future holds for higher education. We also look at an after school program that aims at lowering the rate of juvenile crime in Columbia.
