The US Government instituted the largest-ever federal tobacco tax on April 1st. The 62 cent jump raised the tax from 39 cents to $1.01. KBIA's Steve Weinman took it to the streets of Columbia to get reactions from smokers. Dr. Drew Pinsky, 20 year host of "Loveline" and more recently VH1's "Celebrity Rehab" and "Sober House", visits MU's campus. KBIA's Ashley Moore talks to Dr. Drew and gets student reactions to "the hook-up." Also, the Missouri House approves a measure requiring drug tests for welfare recipients. Rebecca Beitsch reports on debate this caused on the Capital. And on this week's Global Check Up- NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets clinch their first ever playoff spot with the help of a new addition- a little love and support? Hosted by KBIA's Kevein Lorenz.

The Missouri Department of Heath and Senior Services is trying to set better nutrition guidelines for day-care centers. KBIA’s Joe Garber met with a local pre-school director to discuss the Eat Smart program. When you think of a farmer, you may think of a man wearing jeans, working on his farm. This would be one of many misconceptions people have about farmers. For one thing, there are many women working in agriculture, and they wear suits. KBIA's Lindsey Hoffman went to MU's annual "Women in Agriculture Symposium" and met some of these professionals. Also, KBIA's Gretchen Mahan reports on a recent MU study finds that the earth's crust melts more easily than scientists previously thought.

The University of Missouri System is suing one of its leading researchers over intellectual property violations. The suit alleges that chemical engineering professor Galen Suppes failed to assign ownership of several of his inventions to the University. KBIA's Elle Moxley expalins the long-running feud.
