Columbia Celebrates National Trails Day with Golden Boot Hunt

Provided by Columbia Parks and Recreation

A "golden" boot will be up for grabs in Columbia on Saturday.

GetAbout Columbia and Columbia Parks and Recreation will hide the boot somewhere along the city’s trails and provide clues to the boot’s location via Facebook and Twitter. The finder of the boot will receive one hundred dollars in the form of a Parks and Recreation gift certificate.

The hunt for the boot helps celebrate the American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day on June 6.

GetAboutColumbia Outreach Coordinator Janet Godon said there are a few tips that treasure seekers should know.

“I would highly recommend they have a copy of our new trails guide and map with them,” Godon said. “Or view that online as they’re figuring out the clues.”

The first clue will be released at 7 a.m. on Saturday morning through social media, as well as on the Parks and Recreation Hotline.

Peter Olsen, the Vice President of Programs and Government Relations for The American Hiking Society, said that the trails are important parts of communities like Columbia.

“In communities, it gets people outdoors, it gives them a close place to exercise, to connect with the land and connect with nature,” Olsen said. “But also in communities of medium size, it can connect neighbors and neighborhoods with each other, bringing people together face-to-face.”
