The columbia City Council unanimously passed a measure creating the EEZ Board.

The Columbia City Council voted to issue about 20 million dollars in bonds to fund multiple sewer projects.

10 percent of the funds raised from the bonds will be used to create a sewage extension to the Midway area. The project would create a means to annex the area.

Columbia City Manager, Mike Matthes, said there are still some negotiations that need to take place between the city and Midway area landowners to allow for the annexation, but the sewage project will be take place whether or not the city reaches an agreement with the landowners.

“The worst case scenario after tonight’s vote is we still do the sewer project, and then if any or those property owners every want to connect to it that’s when they would have to sign a pre-annexation agreement.”

The bonds go up for sale March 16,” said Matthes.

The rest of the $20 million raised with the bonds will be used for repair projects in the Flatbranch Basin.

Matthes said the process involves material that hardens inside the pipe creating a new pipe within the old pipe to patch holes in the existing sewage lines.

“What you end up with is actually is a better pipe that isn’t leaking and water can’t get into and that’s the critical with inflow and infiltration work,” said Matthes.

The bonds will go on sale March 16.
