Columbia College approved a measure Monday that will restructure the school’s academic departments. Under the new structure the school will be broken down into three separate departments with three separate deans instead of the current structure of one school and a singular dean.

The president of Columbia College Dr. Scott Dalrymple addressed the need for more than one dean as the school continues to grow.

“We now have over 25,000 students all across the country and different venues and it’s just an awfully lot for one person to oversee,” said Dalrymple.

The new format will feature three deans operating under a singular provost. The three schools that are being created include schools of business administration, natural sciences, and humanities, arts and social sciences.

Dalrymple says having three schools is a financially appropriate number and provides the academic support the school is looking for. He says by restructuring the school it will allow faculty to focus more on research and advising students as well as the development of new programs.

The process of finding the new deans will likely take some time. Daisy Grossnickle, the chair of the Board of Trustees for Columbia College believes 2016 will be when the process is put into action.

“This will probably begin in the fall of 2016.The academic calendar will allow us next year to look for the opportunity to have some outstanding candidates and get the deans in place,” said Grossnickle.

The changes will effect Columbia College campuses nationwide.
