Columbia Firefighters Aim to Increase Coverage and Reduce Response Times

The Columbia Fire Department plans on increasing staffing and the number of fire stations in the next few years to keep up with the city’s growth.

A report released last week identified staffing and coverage as some of the biggest challenges facing the department. The 2018-2021 Strategic Plan used feedback from residents and within the department to identify strengths, weaknesses and areas where the department could improve.

Assistant Fire Chief Brad Frazier said strong community support and a need for expansion were the main takeaways from the report.

“The information that we gleaned were things we already knew,” he said.
