Columbia is considering putting a freeze on new permits for student housing construction until December.
The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that the city council will hear the ordinance for the first time Monday, but won't discuss or vote on it. The earliest the council can vote on the bill is May 16.
Mayor Brian Treece says he wants to pause development to review city infrastructure needs.
The ordinance would allow multifamily residential development to continue in the immediate vicinity of the campus. But developers wouldn't be able to get permits for projects in an area slightly further away from campus until Dec. 1.
The ordinance could potentially halt several housing projects in the planning stages.
