Governor Parson Tours State In Support Of Gas Tax Increase

Missouri voters are deciding on a gas tax increase when they head to the ballot box in November.

Governor Parson is crossing the state campaigning for the measure.

Governor Parson spoke in Columbia today at the Mercury Alliance meeting in favor of Proposition D, the measure on the ballot asking voters to increase the gas tax. The measure would increase the motor fuel tax 2.5 cents a gallon each year, for a total of 10 cents by the year 2022. It aims to generate over $400 million for road and bridge repair.

Parson says he believes voters understand the crumbling infrastructure needs to be fixed and the fuel tax is the solution.

“The question is are they willing to go out there and do the tax increase, the use fee at the gas pumps to get it done,” Parson said. “But I believe the Constitution’s set up that that’s way we do it. That’s the way we collect these fees. And I think when people realize we haven’t done anything to have part of the solution for over 22 years that we have addressed the infrastructure in our state, that that’s a real problem.”

Parson is on a 13 city tour backing Prop D over four days. Tomorrow he visits St. Louis, Rolla, and Sedalia.
