Mayor Holds Meeting to Address Recent Downtown Shootings

After five shootings and reports of shots fired in and around the downtown Columbia area in a week, Mayor Brian Treece met with police and local business owners Monday to address concerns and discuss plans of action.

A man received a non-life-threatening injury after being shot at the corner of Tenth Street and Broadway on July 29. There was a report of shots fired in the East Campus area the same day, and MidiCi was damaged in a shooting early Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon, a shooting between vehicles was reported in the area of North Seventh Street and Business Loop 70 East. Late Saturday, the police responded to the sound of a gunshot at the parking garage at Fifth and Walnut streets and found a woman dead with what they said was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The manager of MidiCi had no comment Monday afternoon on the shooting that damaged his business.

In a press conference after the closed-door meeting, Treece said that even though these shootings happened within a week, the downtown area should not be considered dangerous.
