A spokesperson for the Columbia City Prosecutor’s office has confirmed that Columbia City Prosecutor Stephen Richey filed third degree assault charges against Melissa Click Tuesday morning. Third degree assault is a Class C Misdemeanor.
Click, an assistant professor of communications, drew national attention after she confronted a student photographer and another student videographer during the protests, calling for "muscle" to help remove them from the protest area.
The students were filming after the university system's president and the Columbia campus' chancellor resigned amid protests over what some saw as indifference to racial issues.
The videographer filed a complaint with university police.
According to the office, a court date has yet to be determined and Click will be mailed a summons with the court date once it is set by the court.
Click did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. Officials at the University of Missouri say they are pursuing no action at this time.
