MU Medical School focuses on LGBT health

Health for the LGBT, or lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender population is expected to become a focus of the MU Medical School.

MizzouMed Pride wants to increase awareness of LGBT health.  A concern that members of the LGBT community have is being discriminated against if they disclose their sexual orientation. Desiray Bailey is the president of the national Gay and Lesbian Medical Association. She says education can help eliminate discrimination.

“Discrimination is a health hazard and it doesn’t have to happen. So having cultural competency training is really imperative for better quality healthcare and for better health outcomes in LGBT patients," said Bailey.

Bailey also  says she is supportive of medical students who are trying to make a difference in the curriculum of their schools.
