Nixon Decides Not to Renew Mo Cuts

Governor Nixon has announced some cuts to the University of Missouri System won’t be renewed next year.

By Adam Smith (Columbia, Mo.)

In 2011, the governor issued blanket funding cuts of seven percent to all Missouri state public colleges and universities. He also cut an additional one percent from the University of Missouri system after it raised tuition. That one percent cut won’t be renewed next year. That puts $4.5 million back into the university.

State Representative Chris Kelly represents Columbia in the General Assembly. Kelly said he’s happy the governor has decided to restore the funding. He also hopes this reversal represents a change in the administration’s view of higher education.

“I hope it’s the beginning of a more pro-university approach,” Nixon said.

Also, the governor’s additional one percent cut from Missouri Western State University will not be renewed next year.
