Governor Jay Nixon's budget request for more money both this year and next faces big hurdles from lawmakers.
Republican lawmakers this week raised concerns about approving new spending for this year at the same time the governor is withholding money from some priorities.
Nixon is asking to spend $140 million in general revenue in his supplemental budget request. Most of the money is for current Medicaid needs, including higher drug costs.
Budget committee chairman and Republican Senator Kurt Schaefer, of Columbia, says lawmakers are unlikely to give Nixon money when he's holding back $502 million elsewhere in the 2015 budget.
For next year, Nixon also wants more money for public schools and other spending. That money would come primarily from Medicaid expansion, which Republican leaders say is a 'nonstarter.'
