Officer Shoots, Kills Man Who Fires at Police in Springfield

Authorities say an officer has fatally shot a man after he fired at police in a Springfield neighborhood.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that the man was identified Tuesday as 40-year-old Joshua Stanford. Police said in a news release that Stanford shot at officers Monday at a neighborhood intersection while they were responding to a report that a package had been stolen from a front porch.

The release says one of the officers then caught up with Stanford in an alley, where he "presented a threat" with a firearm. The release says Stanford was shot when he refused to comply with the officer's commands. No officers were wounded.

Neighbors described the man running through an alley, leaping fences and briefly entering a home.
