Palm Sunday procession persists in spite of precipitation

Palm branches waived above umbrellas on Sunday (April 13) at the annual Blessing of the Palms, a short ecumenical service held in downtown Columbia each year on Palm Sunday.

Clergy and congregants from the downtown churches converged on the corner of Ninth Street and Broadway at 10:30, and clergy from each church took turns leading the service.

Last year’s service was canceled due to snow. The rain was light through most of this year’s service, and even let up briefly. As the Rev. Richard Ramsey of First Presbyterian Church said the benediction, asking for blessings to come down, a heavy rain began to fall, and crowd members laughed as they recessed back to their own churches.
