State and county officials are urging travelers to use caution this morning, after a round of sleet and freezing temperatures descended on much of the state last night, leaving much of central and north Missouri covered.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisoryfor much of central Missouri through this evening. The Missouri Department of Transportation says its crews have been out working to clear roads across the state. MoDOT issued a statement saying, "the northern half of the state is covered and travelers are asked to use extreme caution if the have to get out."

Boone County joint communications reports that the icy conditions caused about 100 accidents in the county during the Friday evening commute between 5-7pm, and additional staff were called in to handle the high volume of calls.

County officials advise residents to refrain from travel through this evening. The county advises those involved in non-injury accidents to call the Public Safety Joint Communications line at 573.442.6131.

MoDOT's Traveler Information Map has information on state road conditions.
