A Columbia school district committee is considering a plan to allow two employees to carry guns on school grounds.

Teachers in the Columbia Public School District have chosen the Columbia Missouri National Education Association to represent them through collective bargaining.

More than 900 teachers went to the polls on Thursday to decide if they wanted to be represented by a union.  Winning 55 percent of the votes, teacher’s union Columbia Missouri National Education Association will now be able negotiate legally-binding agreements with the school district about Columbia teacher’s salaries and working conditions. President Susan McClintic says the next step is to survey their teachers.

The Columbia Public School district will receive about $400,000 less funding from the state next year compared to the previous year. The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, or DESE, announced its preliminary allocation plan last week. The estimation is based on the state foundation formula. DESE’s spokesperson Sarah Potter says the state doesn’t have enough money to keep up with the foundation formula, which has been in effect for six years.
