The Springfield Police Department is hoping to offer free courses to motorcyclists in an effort to prevent future crashes. According to SPD, Springfield has seen a record number of fatal motor vehicle crashes this year involving motorcycles. Between January 1 and September 23, there have been nine fatalities involving motorcycles.
The department applied for and was awarded a Highway Safety grant from MODOT. It will go before Springfield City Council October 5 for approval. The funding will allow SPD to offer one-day Share the Road motorcycle safety courses for free.
And SPD, in a news release, said motorcyclists should wear a DOT helmet along with other protective equipment; take a motorcycle safety course; drive at a safe speed; and avoid aggressive driving.
The department asks drivers to watch out for motorcycles; don’t drive distracted; and avoid aggressive driving.
