4-year-old Girl Dies After Being Hit by Columbia Police Car

A 4-year-old girl has died after being struck by a Columbia Police Department vehicle Friday afternoon at Battle High School. 

Around 3:55 p.m. CPD joint communications received a radio call from an officer that an incident happened at Battle High School. 

The officer was driving a department SUV when the child was struck, acting Police Chief Jill Schlude said in a news conference. 


 
 
The officer involved in the incident, another officer and Battle High School personnel provided medical assistance to the girl immediately following the incident, according to a news  release from the Police Department. Further medical aid was requested, and the Columbia Fire Department and University Hospital EMTs arrived at the scene. The girl was then transported to University Hospital, where she died as a result of injuries sustained during the incident, according to the release. 

"I would ask everyone to please pray for the family and for the officer that was involved in this incident. It is extremely tragic and there's just a lot of people that need prayers tonight," Schlude said.

Missouri State Highway Patrol is now in charge of the accident investigation and was on the scene Friday evening. 

Further details will be released in an incident report curated by patrol officers, Scott White, public information officer for the patrol said.
