This weekend might be a heat wave, but skip your plans to sit in front of the fan. Instead, go to the Maplewood Barn or check out Columbia’s community gardens. Then plan your Fourth of July. Follow our guide.
How the Other Half Loves (Fri-Sun, 8 p.m.)
Check out Maplewood Barn Community Theatre for the opening weekend of How the Other Half Loves, a comedy about extramarital affairs. It’ll take your mind off the heat for a bit. As always, bring a lawn chair and bug spray.
The Garden Cruise (Sat, 9 a.m.)
Grab a bike and join fellow gardeners for the Garden Cruise, a three-hour bike tour of five community gardens in Columbia. “Each stop will feature a tour of the garden with a garden liaison informing participants about starting a garden plot, the community garden network and offering tips about cultivating food,” says Emily Downing, outreach intern for Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture. Finally, an opportunity to swap stories about tomatoes.
FOURTH OF JULY
It’s time to celebrate our country, Fourth of July style. You know what that means: barbecues, beers and fireworks. Here’s how to do it right.
Fire in the Sky (Wed, 6:30 p.m.)
After you’ve had your fill of hot dogs and cold beers, end your Fourth of July celebration in The District. The fireworks show has moved downtown for good. Find a rooftop, or scope out a cozy spot at Peace Park or Flat Branch Park. Just do it early. This event is sure to bring in a crowd. Here’s the schedule.
Chillin' On The Rooftop (Wed, 7 p.m.)
Head to the Missouri Theater this Fourth of July and enjoy the 20-minute fireworks show from the best spot in town. Continue the celebration at this rooftop party. The pizza, wings, chocolate chip cookies and cash bar are calling for you.
Red, White & Boom (Wed, 9 p.m.)
If downtown fireworks don’t entice you, then mozy on over to Jeff City for one of the state’s largest fireworks displays. I suggest you spend the day at the Salute to Festival first. It’s chock full of summer entertainment: concerts, beer gardens, a carnival, etc. Yay, America.
