Brunner airs first critical ad in Missouri GOP Senator bid

U.S. Senate candidate John Brunner has launched the first critical TV ad in Missouri's Republican Senate primary.

Brunner's campaign debuted an ad Tuesday accusing Republican opponents Sarah Steelman and Todd Akin of "manufacturing debt" in their government jobs.

The ad targets votes Akin took in Congress to raise the nation's debt limit and pass bills containing spending earmarks. It targets votes Steelman took as a state senator in support of bonds and budget bills authorizing particular projects.

Brunner, a St. Louis businessman, has financed previous TV ads with his own money. His campaign declined to disclose the funding source for the newest ad.

Brunner, Akin and Steelman are competing in an August primary election for the right to challenge Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.
