Cinco de Mayo weekend ft. Believers, theater and Thai food

Branch out from the classic Mexican food y margaritas Cinco de Mayo celebration. Before you hit up La Siesta or El Maguey, go to these events. Those tequila shots can wait. You have all weekend.

Believers Album Release w/ Videology! and Enemy Airship at The Blue Note (Sat, 10 p.m.)

Head to The Blue Note this Cinco de Mayo for the Believers Album Release. You might have caught this five-man band during True/False weekend. Take this opportunity to see them again.

Singer/guitarist Wesley Powell describes their music as a mix of "careful melodies, driving bass riffs and subtle samples over a rhythm-heavy, double-drummer backbone." He says, "Each song has an undying love of pop at its core. That said, I suppose it could safely be called 'big pop.'"

Believers released their six-track, self-titled EP back in March. Pick up a 12" vinyl record for $10 or a digital download for $4 at the show. Their music is also available online, at Maude Vintage, or in person.

"We're usually more than happy to grab a record from home and get it to you, hand to hand, face to face," says Powell.

The show will be a little longer than their normal set. Watch out for visual treats by Daryle Bascom aka Videology during their set, too.

Movies in the Park: "Puss in Boots" (Fri, 8:30 p.m.)

Cozy up at Flat Branch Park and watch "Puss in Boots" for the first installment of Movies in the Park. This once-a-month treat happens all summer. Look out for "The Muppets" on June 8, "The Smurf" on July 13 and "Dr Suess' the Lorax" on August 10. How can you say no to a kids' movie on a large, inflatable screen? I know I can’t.

Missoula Children’s Theatre: "The Secret Garden" (Sat, 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.)

Give another shout out to the kids and watch more than 50 local students perform "The Secret Garden." This musical adaptation is sure to make you want a secret garden of your own.

Murder at the Howard Johnson’s (Fri-Sat, 7:30 p.m.; Sun, 2 p.m.)

What do you get when you mix a love triangle, a tacky motel and a murder plot? Murder at the Howard Johnson’s, of course. Watch this comedy show from the Columbia Entertainment Company and see if Arlene Miller and her lover, Mitchell Lovell, succeed in killing husband Paul Miller.

Chim's Thai Kitchen opens Tuesday in The District (Tues, 11 a.m.)

OK, this one isn’t on the weekend, but Tuesday is the new Saturday. Head to this Cooper's Landing classic for its soft opening in The District. Check out new menu items, such as Thai chicken wings and pad woonsen, a glass noodle stir fry. Chim's plans on holding a grand opening later on once they get their liquor and wine license. Be sure to stroll down 10th Street after bars close in coming weeks. That's right, Chim's plans to reopen for delicious Thai after hours. Watch out, El Rancho

CoMo Weekender is curated by Trupti Rami in hopes of enlivening those 55 hours away from the workweek. Email questions, comments or suggestions to events@kbia.org.
