The City of Springfield has officially denounced the actions of the Minneapolis police officers in connection to the killing of a black man who was in police custody, George Floyd. In a statement, city officials called the conduct of the four police officers involved “intolerable.” City Manager Jason Gage drafted a resolution condemning the actions to be presented at Monday night's City Council meeting, which will be held virtually. This comes after three days of public protests against racism and police brutality. Earlier, Springfield Police Department chief Paul Williams released a statement calling the actions “egregious and inexcusable.”
Nationwide protests broke out last week after video surfaced of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on the neck of Floyd for several minutes while Floyd repeated “I can’t breathe.”
