City Of Springfield Issues Challenge In Observance Of America Recycles Day

America Recycles Day is Sunday, and the City of Springfield has issued a challenge to area residents.  The challenge is to recycle 100 tons of paper between Sunday and December 17.

According to city officials, on average, 85 tons of paper is collected per month at city recycling drop-off sites.  And they say 25 percent of the material disposed of in the local landfill is paper.

Wrapping paper, greeting cards and tissue paper are just some of the paper items accepted at the city’s recycling centers.

All paper recycled in Springfield goes to the local Nestle Purina PetCare facility where items are processed into animal bedding and pet litter products sold in the U.S.  According to the city, approximately $2.5 million is returned to the Springfield community annually in payroll and locally purchased goods and services.
