Columbia is holding a design contest for a city flag.

The City of Columbia is looking for the best designs for an official city flag.

Columbia has never had an official flag, while many other cities in the state, such Jefferson City, St. Louis, and Kansas City, have one. The program specialist Sarah Dresser says the city is looking for a lasting symbol that “captures the history, beauty and uniqueness of the community”.

The City of Columbia welcomes participation of all mid-Missourians, from elementary school students to adults, from amateurs to professional graphic designers. “So we are hoping that this contest is open for everyone and that it will have a lot of different people and artists submit to the flag contest," Dresser says.

Submissions are due November 14th, and after that the public will have a month to vote for which flag they like the most on the city's website and at Columbia City Hall. The City Council members will choose a winner from the three flags with the most votes. Winners will be honored during a special flag-raising ceremony planned for the spring, and there's also a $250 cash prize.
