As employees face uncertainty with businesses hit by restrictions aimed at stopping the spread of coronavirus, some industries are looking to hire workers for “essential” services.Dollar General is nearly doubling its hiring rate as the increased demand for household products continues. A statement put out by the company said they’re looking to hire over 50,000 new employees by the end of April, including people who lost their jobs because of the coronavirus.
Another large retailer, Hy-Vee, is also hiring. The chain said in a news release it’s looking for temporary, part-time workers. A manager at a Springfield location said the new jobs mostly involve restocking items and working cash registers. Walmart is also looking to hire 150,000 new employees.
The Springfield-based Penmac Staffing temp agency announced it’s offering work to employees who have been laid off at its 32 locations across eight states. The company is also offering a $50 bonus to workers who’ve been laid off because of a coronavirus-related company policy change. Sara Corman, marketing director for Penmac, told KSMU that most of the jobs are in “essential services” like food distribution and manufacturing.
