The Curtain Call Theatre Company in Kirksville will have a permanent space to perform its future productions. The Kirksville City Council approved on April 6 a special use permit for Curtain Call to use a former church located at 512. W. Elizabeth Street. The permit allows the group to use the church for three years with the option of renewal after request.

Mark Willis, the Curtain Call Theatre Company President, said they used to have to limit or cancel productions because there was no available space when they needed it.

“Now, with our own building we can have space anytime we want and we can have more expensive play opportunities because we will have larger room for sets,” Willis said.

After the Hazel Creek Free Baptist Will Church relocated, the owners agreed to lease the building to Curtain Call. The owners have two churches but only use one. The one Curtain Call will use has normally been leased as a way for the owners to make profit out of it without losing the property, according to Brad Salby, Kirksville Codes & Planning Director.

Salby said the performances will end before midnight and will not disturb area residents.

“Council has stated that their performances would be done by 11 at night so nothing goes extremely late. And the group has assured us their plays would be over before that time. Probably by 9:30 or 10pm,” Salby said.

Salby said they do not expect parking to be a problem. Willis said he estimates 30 to 50 vehicles will need parking spaces. Salby said the church’s parking lot contains about 20 spots and additional street parking is available around the church as well.
