An effort is underway to recall a Columbia councilmember who voted against a proposal to lessen penalties for marijuana cultivation.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that a petition seeking to recall Ginny Chadwick was certified this week as having enough signatures to go before the city council. Voters could get a chance to decide whether she remains on the council in April.

The pro-marijuana crowd jumpstarted the recall effort in late October after she voted against the ordinance. It was defeated 4-3. Before being elected, Chadwick had indicated that she was in favor of the pot bill.

But Chadwick said after the council's vote she made the statements before a city commission weighed in on the issue and before she had time to fully consider the legal consequences.
