This week, 13 national organizations that represent patients with chronic medical conditions voiced their support for Medicaid expansion in Missouri.The groups, which include heavy hitters like the American Heart Association and Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, are urging Missouri voters to support Amendment 2, which will be on the ballot in August.
The organizations said the coronavirus pandemic is highlighting serious gaps in Medicaid coverage, as many people have lost jobs. The organizations point to the closing of rural hospitals in Missouri and say Medicaid expansion could keep them open by cutting down on unpaid care.
Expanding Medicaid in Missouri would mean people who make up to 138% of the federal poverty level would be eligible for government health care. The Show-Me State is one of only 14 states that haven't yet expanded the program. Missouri voters will decide on the measure August 4.
