A historic icon at MU is going to be back in use soon. Jesse Hall is scheduled to reopen its doors around mid-May after being shut down for ten months for refurbishing.

Campus Facilities spokesperson Karlan Seville says the $8.5 million improvements were needed.

“That building has not ever had a sprinkler system in it, and, so that is important because it’s, you know, a heavily used building on campus,” Seville said. “About 400 people work out of that building, and then, an additional 1,200 people can be in that building at events.”

Seville also said the fact that it is one of the most popularly frequented buildings on campus contributed to its closing for improvements.

Smoke detectors will also be installed. Seville said that Jesse Hall will look “basically like it did” before the upgrades were made.

The first events will be graduation commencements, held from May 15th through the 17th. Offices will begin opening on the 18th
