Macy's to Close Columbia Store, St. Louis Area Call Center

Macy's plans to close a store in Columbia that employs 81 people and a call center in Bridgeton that employs 750 people.

The closings are among about 4,800 job cuts the Cincinnati-based department store chain detailed Wednesday, citing slumping sales.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the Bridgeton call center will close this spring. Those operations will move to credit and customer service centers in Tempe, Arizona; Clearwater, Florida; and Mason, Ohio. About 640 positions will be added at the three centers.

Macy's announced in September that it planned to close store but the list of closures wasn't released. Forty of the chain's 770 stores were on Wednesday's closure list, with four closing last year and 36 this year.

The closures will reduce the chain's expenses by $400 million.
