Hundreds of workers at Mercy Springfield are being laid off or furloughed.
In a letterto the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development, Springfield mayor, Ken McClure, and Greene County Commissioner, Bob Dixon, Mercy said 696 employees will be affected by the decision.
The letter states that the action is due to "the unforeseeable, dramatic downturn in business caused by the coronavirus natural disaster."
The position eliminations and furloughs are expected to be permanent for some employees and temporary for others, according to Mercy.
All employees who are impacted by the layoffs and furloughs have been notified. Mercy said in the letter that the affected employees are not represented by a union.
According to Mercy, separations from employment began May 22 and will go through August 20.
