The Missouri House passed a bill that will require schools to have additional sexual education that is focused on online predators and how to stay safe online.

Christi Hopper, Coordinator for Secondary Health, said she agrees with the bill’s emphasis on online sexual predator protection.

She said, “It’s a big problem and it happens a lot and I think that our kids need to know what is out there. They’re online, they need to know how to do it safely.”

State Representative Genise Montecillo said the bill will help make students aware that there are risks that come with technology and social media.

Montecillo said, “Students are very tech savvy, but they’re still kids and they don’t understand that the other person they are communicating with on the other side or that other computer may be an adult or someone who may mean them harm.”

Schools will also be required to teach students the personal and legal consequences of taking part in inappropriate text messaging.

Montecillo said she is hopeful the bill will pass through the senate without any amendments.
