MU Wellness Resource Center kicks off Alcohol Responsibility Month, hosts Sober Tailgate

MU’s Wellness Resource center hosted a sober tailgate outside of the MU Student Center Saturday. The tailgate was hosted by the organization Sober In College.

The month of October alcohol responsibility month at MU, and Sober In College hosted this tailgate as one of its kick off events for the month.

The tailgate was meant for students to come enjoy free food and games, with no alcohol, to spread awareness.

“Tailgating is a huge part of college, this tailgate was for people to have a warm environment where they didn’t feel pressured to drink,” said Ellen Hinze, one of the co-chairs for alcohol responsibility month.

The sober tailgate brought together 300 or more people, who were able to enjoy the festivities and learn more about what it means to be sober on a college campus.

Organizers say alcohol responsibility month is not only about being sober, but is also meant to teach those who do decide to drink, to drink responsibly and make responsible choices. Some of these choices include having a designated driver, and making sure that you are hydrated while consuming alcohol.

One other very important resource that the Wellness Resource Center is providing for the month of October is hydration stations. Three nights during the month, students will set up stations in both Greek town and downtown and pass out water bottles to help those who are drinking stay hydrated.

Sober In College hopes that with activities like the sober tailgate, that more students are informed on the importance of both being sober and drinking responsibly.
