Gov. Nixon announced Thursday that he is appointing Dr. Anne Heyen to the Missouri State Board of Nursing, pending approval from the senate.

Heyen is an assistant professor of nursing at Lincoln University, where she has worked since 2005. She has also worked as a nurse at St. Mary’s Health Center in Jefferson City.

“I think what I bring is a lot of my education and my hospital experience,” Heyen said. “And then I have my doctorate in nursing also, and my education background to provide that perspective.”

The Board of Nursing governs the nursing field in the state, issuing licenses, regulating education and disciplining malpractice.

She said she is looking forward to serving the public and building upon the board’s current work.

“I think the board is doing an absolutely fantastic job in what they’re doing,” Heyen said.

She said that going forward, it’s important that the board is “letting people know what the board does and letting nurses know how the board is there to help them.”

Heyen is from Ashland, and will be the only member on the eight-person board representing a rural community.

Heyen said that she thanks the governor for the opportunity to serve on the board.
