An award to MU's computer engineering program from the National Science Foundation has resulted in one million dollars in grants.

The engineering faculty entered the state wide competition and their proposals proved to be best against several other competitors.

This award will give MU the ability to install a supercomputer on campus and get new high performance technology. New equipment will lead to new capabilities for researchers in the UM system and to access it quicker and more efficiently.

Prasad Calyam, an assistant professor of computer science and leader of the CI engineer project, says the award gives them expertise to look at big data research problems like never before.

"We are one of the very few institutions to be given this award of funding to buy the equipment and get this expert personnel to look at these big data research problems, "said Calyam."This is a new trend that is happening in the big enterprises that deal with big data in retail and health care so we are trying to build a new model for hybrid clouds for science applications on campuses. "

The new technology network is planned to be available for use between all the four campuses on the University of Missouri system within the next two or three years. It will link researchers and engineers to have faster access to more accurate scientific discoveries while also advancing research capabilities.

In the next four months 16 researchers and 147 students that were a part of the proposals will be working to research this new equipment. Over time this team will slowly transition it to be the core supercomputer for everyone on campus.
