Public schools all around Columbia will put on a number of events to celebrate and educate the community about Black History Month this February. By Annie Trout
Columbia Public Schools spokesperson Michelle Baumstark says the events planned specifically to celebrate the month are an important component of the schools’ curriculums for students to learn about the history of the African American culture and about the important roles African Americans have played throughout the country’s history.
“It’s about education; it’s about celebrating; it’s about recognizing all of the wonderful ways that our community is diverse and how that benefits all of us.”
Baumstark says West Boulevard Elementary turns its building into a museum to teach students about notable African Americans in Missouri history.
