Walmart is seeking to lower the property taxes it pays on its stores in Johnson County, Kansas.

Segment 1: Appeals by big-box retailers to have property assessed as though it is vacant could mean big revenue loss for local governments.

A strategy first seen in the upper Midwest has found its way to Kansas and its Board of Tax Appeals, which is considering the latest request from a multi-national company to reduce the appraised values of its stores in Johnson County, Kansas. We heard how this so-called 'dark store theory' works, and why it could cost the county tens of millions of dollars in tax reimbursements and hundreds of millions in revenue that supports schools and public services.


Segment 2, beginning at 27:00: With the economy still going strong, now is the time to prepare for a recession, say the Smart Money Experts.

Economic recessions in this country usually occur about every five years, yet it's been more than a decade since the Great Recession of 2008.
