South African youth learn advocacy through journalism

Students enrolled in the Umuzi Photo Club learn how to use their photography to document social and economic problems, like high unemployment and teenage pregnancy.

In poor areas of South Africa, trainers from a small organization called the Umuzi Photo Club give disposable cameras to high school students and teach them basic photography.

The students enrolled in the workshops also learn how to use their photography to document social and economic problems, like high unemployment and teenage pregnancy.

Global Journalist host David Reed was joined in-studio by Emily Coppel. She was the program coordinator and content manager for the Umuzi Photo Club. The two were joined by Tapelo Motsuumi, a photojournalism student in a prestigious program who got his start at the Umuzi club.

Rehman Tungekar is a former producer for KBIA, who left at the beginning of 2014.
