Councilwoman Kristi Fulnecky is resigning from Springfield City Council, according to a news release from the city Thursday morning.   Fulnecky notified Mayor Ken McClure that she would be stepping down from the General Seat C, effective Thursday.

According to the release, Fulnecky said her family would be moving to Nixa, Missouri “in a few days.”

The City Charter requires that council members reside within Springfield city limits.

Fulnecky ran against McClure for mayor in a contentious—and expensive—race:  according to campaign fundraising reports, each candidate raised over 100,000 dollars. Fulnecky campaigned largely on the issue of public safety.

Fulnecky's term was set to expire in April, 2019.

In a statement, McClure thanked Fulnecky for her service.

The city said it will share details about filling the vacant seat soon.
