The University of Missouri is planning to raise the cost of food and housing at three campuses beginning next school year.

University system officials approved the rate hikes for its Kansas City, St. Louis and Rolla campuses on Monday, the Kansas City Star reported.

The Columbia campus will be the only one with declining costs since officials approved a plan to lower room and board rates by 1.8 percent in November to help manage a dip in enrollment over the last four years.

The UM System Board of Curators "approved our lower rates in November, because we knew it would help us recruit students," said Christian Basi, a university spokesman.

The costs of food and housing at all of the university system's campuses depend on the room's size and design, as well as the number of meals that a student signs up to purchase. All campuses offer a predominant plan for food and dorm living, which is the most popular option among students.

According to the proposed rate increases, the Kansas City campus will raise its predominant food and housing plan by $294 a year, from $10,334 to $10,628.

The rates at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla will go up by $223 in the 2019-2020 school year, from $9,987 to $10,210. The St. Louis campus will hike rates by $200, from $10,140 to $10,340.

University officials plan to finalize the increases Feb. 7.
