The University of Missouri announced that it is planning to resume in-person classes in the fall for its Columbia campus.

The University says it is working with public health officials and their own health care experts in developing systems to protect students and staff when they return. Faculty and staff will return in phases as the pandemic begins to decline.

However, University of Missouri spokesperson Christian Basi said that there are several hundred employees on campus working to clean and disinfect before students return. Basi said that they are also developing new social distancing procedures which may impact the manner in which classes are taught. This may include limiting the number of students that can be in a classroom.

Basi wouldn't give a specific date as to when faculty and staff will begin returning to campus. He emphasized that the specifics of this process have been in the works for a while and may be affected by changes regarding the pandemic.

Basi said it is important that the community remains flexible as circumstances can change rapidly.
