Missouri voters will decide Nov. 8 whether to amend the state Constitution to allow lawmakers to add voter-identification requirements.
Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon announced Monday he's placing the proposal on the general election ballot. That ballot also will ask voters to pick the next president and Missouri governor.
At issue are longstanding efforts by Republicans to require voters to show photo ID. GOP lawmakers say that would prevent voter fraud.
But the Missouri Supreme Court has ruled against photo-identification requirements in the past. That's why lawmakers this year are asking voters to change the constitution to give them the power to require a photo ID to vote.
Democrats say such a requirement could disenfranchise thousands of voters who don't have a driver's license or other identification.
