Some residents of the West Plains area are speaking up in support of the U.S. Postal Service.  The group, Indivisible:  Heart of the Ozarks hosted a demonstration today in West Plains.  The event was held in support of the postal service but also out of concern that recent changes to the organization could mean some mail-in votes won’t count in the November election.

Lois Reborne was one of the event organizers.  She talked to KSMU from where she was standing near the West Plains square.  At least 30 people lined both sides of Washington street carrying signs bearing a variety messages.

"'Refund the U.S. Postal Service,' 'Save our Postal Service,' 'Don't Stamp out the Postal Service,' let me move down past this other car.  'The U.S. Postal Service is an American Institution,' 'Support the U.S. Postal Service Forever,'" said Reborne as she walked down the street reading signs.

Reborne wore a sign covered with the West Plains Daily Quill, a newspaper that many area residents receive by mail.

"And then I stuck letters, envelopes that I had recently received, including a thank you note from my 10-year-old grandson," she said.  "It's like, that's our mail, and if it doesn't come for weeks, if it doesn't come for days, we just don't have any source for that information."

Reborne encourages everyone to educate themselves about what’s happening to the U.S. Postal Service right now.  You can find news stories about it at npr.org.
