Work begins on Hominy Creek Trail Extension

City of Columbia

Work on a new extension to Columbia’s Hominy Creek Trail began Monday, according to a city press release.

The new project is the second phase of a two-phase project that will create a 2.3 mile trail by the time it is completed. The initial trail begins near Stephens Lake Park and will eventually extend north of I-70.

The first phase of the trail, which runs from Stephens Lake Park to Lansing Avenue, opened in 2013. The new extension is intended to make commuting without a vehicle safer for pedestrians.

“The extension of the trail will allow you to get under I-70 and get to the neighborhoods north of I-70,” PedNet executive director Annette Triplett said.

PedNet, or pedestrian and pedaling network, Coalition is a non-profit organization that promotes active transportation. Advocating for this trail has been easier than others in the city, Triplett said.

“This trail, as far as we know, has not had a lot of controversy so it’s not something that we’ve had to work on as hard as some other trail projects,” Triplett said.

GetAbout Columbia, the organization funding and administering the trail, says construction of the new extension will not have much of an effect on traffic in the area.

“Most of the construction is going to be done off the streets,” GetAbout Columbia’s Tyler Wallace said. “There will be some impact to traffic because we have to get the equipment down to the construction start but minimal impact is expected.”

Wallace said there are no plans in place to expand the Hominy Creek Trail any further after phase two is complete.

The city says the final trail extension, which will end at The Links apartment complex, is expected to open this fall.
