Federal prosecutors in St. Louis have indicted five men for two separate killings — the first indictments since the city's police chief reached out to the U.S. Attorney's office to help address the increase in violent crime.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — The St. Louis police chief says the National Guard will soon be ending its deployment in the city.

The Guard was activated by Gov. Jay Nixon to provide security as a grand jury decision was announced Nov. 24 in the fatal shooting of a black 18-year-old by a white Ferguson police officer.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The city of St. Louis is looking to boost minority recruiting efforts in its police and fire departments.

Mayor Francis Slay and Chief Sam Dotson joined other city officials Tuesday at City Hall to announce details about the new effort, which will enlist off-duty members of the Ethical Society of Police to work as paid mentors to prospective recruits. The society's 250 members represent black officers in the city.
