Children on the autism spectrum will soon have a more comforting atmosphere at local libraries.
The Community Foundation of the Ozarks’ Diversity and Inclusion Grant Program has awarded the Springfield-Greene County Library more than $11,000. The money will be used to provide devices and materials to help families affected by autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities prepare for a visit to the library.
Specifically, the grant will fund sensory kits for each of the 10 library branches and the Mobile Library. Noise-canceling headphones, wiggle cushions and other items will be available to use in the libraries.
Library Adult Programming Coordinator Katie Hopkins said in a news release, the noise level of simple things such as a buzzing fluorescent light and a rolling cart can be difficult and even debilitating for a child affected by autism.
