The St. Louis Cardinals have a new manager.
By Bill Raack (St. Louis)
The team formally introduced Mike Matheny at a press conference Monday. The 41-year-old Matheny spent five of his 13 major league seasons as a catcher for the Cardinals. He has not coached or managed at the major league or minor league levels since retiring as a player in 2006. But Matheny doesn’t see that as a detriment:
“This is a position about managing people and its communication skills and people skills and then I think you have to show capacity to learn and grow," he said. " I think you have to show capability that you know what you’re talking about and I think you have to show character and I think you have be able to show people that you care about them. ”
Matheny replaces Tony LaRussa, who retired last month after the Cardinals won the World Series.
