JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — The St. Louis police chief says the National Guard will soon be ending its deployment in the city.
The Guard was activated by Gov. Jay Nixon to provide security as a grand jury decision was announced Nov. 24 in the fatal shooting of a black 18-year-old by a white Ferguson police officer.
St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson says the Guard began reducing its troops in his city Monday and should be entirely out either Tuesday or Wednesday. He said the Guard also has been reducing its numbers throughout the St. Louis region.
Nixon called more than 2,200 Guard members to the area after protesters looted and burned stores in response to the announcement that Officer Darren Wilson won't be charged for Michael Brown's death.
