Investigators have found a note Missouri auditor’s office spokesman Robert “Spence” Jackson wrote before his apparent suicide.
Jefferson City Police Captain Doug Shoemaker announced the finding Monday, but wouldn’t reveal what it said.
Similarly Shoemaker refused to talk about the political rumors that have surrounded the death of Jackson’s former boss, Tom Schweich, who fatally shot himself last month.
Shoemaker said, “we are very aware of the political issues that are alleged with Mr. Schweich’s death, but our agency won’t comment or really entertain questions that might link Mr. Jackson to any type of political issue, whether it’s perceived or real.”
Schweich had said before his death that he believed the chairman of the GOP in Missouri had been spreading rumors Schweich was Jewish.
Jackson had spoken out in defense of Schweich following Schweich’s suicide, similarly calling for Missouri GOP chairman John Hancock’s resignation.
Jackson had worked for other prominent state republican figures like former Governor Matt Blunt, and former state treasurer Sarah Steelman.
Shoemaker said Jackson probably died early in the weekend, either late Friday or early Saturday.
